Costa Mesa, Calif.- The Hawks have proven that they can score, but the Lions proved they can score more. SDC was outscored 61-49 in the second half and Vanguard went onto pull away to a 109-93 victory.
The 93 points scored tied for the highest of the year, tying with the 93-67 season-opening win against Antelope Valley. The 109 points were the most given up by the Hawks this season.
A high powered Vanguard team jumped out to a 16-6 advantage over SDC. The Hawks simply could not match up defensively out of the gate and started flat offensively. After the first five minutes of the game, the Hawks started to catch fire, finally taking their first lead of the game with 9 minutes left in the first half.
They took a 25-23 lead over Vanguard and it stayed tight throughout the half.
Vanguard took a 48-44 lead heading into half time. Guard Trevor English led the Hawks in scoring in the first half with 16 points on 6-9 shooting and 3-5 from the three point line. Combo guard Delante Dunklin added 14 points in the half, but on a 15 shot attempts.
SDC shot 51 percent from the field in the first half of play while Vanguard shot 47 percent.
The second half was a different story as Vanguard started to pull away late. Vanguard shot 61 percent from the field in the second half.
The Hawks ended the game however with four players in double figures.
Trevor English ended with 30 points on 10-14 from the field, with six rebounds and shooting 5-8 from the three point line.
Dalante Dunklin ended the game with a double- double with 29 points on 9-21 from the field, grabbing 14 rebounds, and shooting 11-15 from the free throw line. Dunklin had a much better second half shooting the basketball, attacking the rim and drawing fouls put him at the line.
Out of Dunklin's 14 rebounds, seven of them were offensive boards.
Vanguard ended with four players in doubles figures as well.
Zach Allmon led the team with a 35 point and 15 rebound performance. He shot 15-22 from the field and was scoring at will.
Jaamon Echols also had a big night with 31 points on 11-23 shooting, while managing to get to the line and hit 8-9 free throws in the night.
SDC falls to 10-15 overall (3-12, GSAC) while Vanguard improves to 18-9 overall (7-8, GSAC).
Next up for the Hawks is a home game against The Master's College on Saturday, Feb. 27th. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
