EL CAJON, Calif. – The SDC men's basketball team scored 52 points in the first half and rode their momentum to an 86-76 win over Menlo on Saturday.
The Hawks shot 53 percent from the floor including 50 percent from beyond the arc.
With the win, SDC improves to 10-10 on the season and 3-7 in GSAC play. The Oaks fall to 9-15 and 3-8 in conference.
Trevor English and Michael Angulo couldn't miss in the first half as SDC poured it on. A layup from Angulo gave the Hawks a 40-24 lead with six minutes left. An English dunk with 1:56 remaining increased their lead to 17 before an Angulo 3-pointer with 22 seconds left gave SDC their biggest lead of the half at 20 before the half.
SDC shot 21-of-32 (65 percent) from the floor in the first. English tallied 14 in the opening 20 minutes, tied with Mark Eden for the team lead. Angulo was right behind with 13.
But in the second half, Menlo's defense was up to the task of slowing the Hawks offense. With 9:56 remaining in the game, the Oaks erased a 21-point deficit, down to eight. The Hawks would answer with a 10-2 run to bring the lead back to double digits at 16.
The closest the Oaks would get in the second was six points with just under a minute left. SDC hit their free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.
The Hawks will travel to Hope International on Feb. 9. Game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
