EL CAJON, Calif. – Leading by four with seven minutes left in the game, the SDC men's basketball team couldn't close out the upset bid as No. 15 Westmont came back and slipped away with a 94-88 victory Saturday night.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to an even 9-9 overall and 2-6 in GSAC play. The Warriors improved to 16-5 overall and 5-3 in conference.
No lead in the first half between the two teams reached higher than four points until six minutes left of the first half as Westmont led 33-27. Daniel Nielsen, Dalante Dunklin, and Nathan Klekas helped the Hawks trim their deficit to just two at the halftime break.
After Westmont opened the second half in a big way, the Hawks again came clawing back using a 10-2 run to draw even at 54-54 thanks to two Mark Eden free throws. Dunklin helped the Hawks grab their first lead since the first half with a layup with 14:19 remaining in the game. Shayne Travers added a layup to increase SDC's lead up to four, 64-60.
Both teams would swap leads, a total of eight times in the second half. The Hawks' last lead was when Dunklin converted on a 3-point play with 2:32 remaining. The Warriors would go on to score nine of the last 11 points.
