SAN DIEGO – The SDC baseball team erased a 5-run deficit with a 5-run fifth but unfortunately surrendered three more runs dropping to the Tritons of UCSD 8-6 in an exhibition Saturday morning.
The loss doesn't affect the Hawks' record and will have two more games before the first real contest counts.
SDC looked to start the game off with a bang as the first two hitters reached on base. Ryan Alvarez hit an infield single to second and David Vega singled to left to get a runner in scoring position with no outs. But Alon Leichman retired the next three Hawks to get escape the inning without a run.
The Tritons would then score two runs in the bottom of the second and three in the third to take a 5-0 lead heading into the top of the fifth.
Caeden Barnes led off the fifth with a single to center and Steven Pico followed with a single of his own to get things going again for the Hawks. Alvarez notched another infield single, this time bringing home Barnes from third to give SDC their first run of the game. Vega's RBI fielder's choice cut the deficit to 5-2. Then the Hawks tied the game with a two-out rally. Two singles and a wild pitch tied the contest at 5-5.
After a scoreless sixth for SDC, the Tritons scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth that paved the way for their win. UCSD scored the three runs on four hits.
Barnes attempted a comeback for SDC in the eight with an RBI single bringing the score to 8-6 but nothing brewed in the ninth as UCSD held on.
Jeremiah Wiley started the game for SDC throwing two innings and allowing four hits and two earned runs. Six other pitchers threw in the game.
Alvarez finished the day going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Vega tallied two hits in five plate appearances with a run and RBI. Patrick Vizcaino and Barnes also tallied two hits with a run and RBI each.
The Hawks will play the same Tritons squad on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before playing in a scrimmage against Cal Baptist on Jan. 28. SDC kicks off their season with an away contest against Cal State San Marcos on Feb. 3.
