EL CAJON, Calif. – At the end of the first half, Hope International banked in a 3-pointer in circus fashion. Everything was going right for the Royals who couldn't miss Saturday shooting 61.8 percent from the field en route to a 91-71 win over the SDC men's basketball team. The Royals shot a red-hot 73.3 percent from beyond the arc (11-of-15).
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 8-6 overall and 1-3 in GSAC play. The Royals improve to 14-2 on the season and 3-0 in conference.
Dalante Dunklin scored the game's first points with a jumper 20 seconds in. Just four minutes later the Royals built a small 10-5 lead hitting four of the first five shots to start the game.
Daniel Nielsen hit a trey of his own to give the Hawks the lead again, 16-13. Both teams traded off leads heading into the half, with HIU taking the lead at halftime with an 8-0 run capped off by Ramon Mejia's 3-point bank shot.
HIU lead 40-33 at the break.
Down 13 early in the second half, the Hawks mounted a comeback, going on a 7-0 run. Shayne Travers and Dalante Dunklin were the key factors in the run scoring all the points. Dunklin scored a game-high with 24 points, shooting 50 percent from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Trevor English, who averages 15 points per game was held to just two points. Nielsen was the only other in double figures with 11.
