SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – With three games left in the season and being down in the conference standings by three games, the game Tuesday night against The Master's was must win for the Hawks, trailing the Mustangs in the standings for the last and final spot for the GSAC playoff picture.
The Hawks showed grit and determination to force on OT period but were later defeated by the Mustangs 89-80, officially eliminating them from postseason play.
With the loss, SDC falls to 5-17 on the year and 0-14 in conference play. The Master's improves to 9-15 overall and 4-9 in the GSAC.
Peter Beale-Wirsing (SR/San Diego, CA)'s jumper with 10 seconds left tied the game at 72 apiece. Before that, Mark Eden (FR/Ontario, CA)'s jumper gave SDC the two point lead with 1:43 remaining in the second before the Mustangs answered with four straight points, all by Korey Anderson.
Eden gave the Hawks the lead in OT with 3:21 remaining with a pair of free throws. The lead was short lived as the Mustangs drilled a 3-pointer 16 seconds after giving them a two point advantage. Beale-Wirsing assed a layup to bring the score back within two but TMC's Russell Byrd scored the last 12 points for the Mustangs to secure the win.
Derrick Thompson (SR/San Diego, CA) scored a game-high 28 points with four steals and three assists. Beale-Wirsing added 15 points and seven rebounds as Eden tallied 14 points to lead the Hawks.
SDC will host Westmont College Saturday in the last home game of the year. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
