EL CAJON, Calif. – Bethesda University scored in all but two innings Tuesday as the Flames defeated the Hawks 19-6.
With the loss, SDC dropped to 3-14 on the year. Bethesda improves to 6-11.
Both teams came out strong offensively as they both scored two runs in the first inning. However it was Bethesda that went on a spree, scoring in five consecutive innings; five runs in the second, four in the third, three in the fourth, and two in the fifth. The five run explosion in the second was spearheaded with a grand-slam by first baseman Dino Mares.
The Hawks were silent until the fourth where Karel Arends (FR/Dakota, Aruba) reached on a fielder's choice and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Austin Yeoman (SO/Norwalk, CA) then doubled to left center, which scored Arends. Yeoman then stole third and scored on a passed ball by the catcher. After a double down the right field line by Justin DiStefano, he was later brought home by Stephen Haviar (JR/San Diego, CA), closing the gap, 14-5.
SDC wouldn't score again until the sixth where Joseph Tellez (SR/Bronx, NY) tripled to left center and scored thereafter on a wild pitch.
The Hawks scored their six runs on nine hits, but the Flames pounded out 20 hits en route to their 19 runs.
Austin Yeoman led SDC with two hits.
Mark Young (JR/El Cajon, CA) was tabbed with the loss. He started the game for the Hawks but lasted just an inning giving up four hits and five runs, two earned.
SDC will host No. 18 Concordia for a 3-game series. Friday's game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. first pitch at Point Loma University. Saturday's double-header is at Grossmont College with a first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
